When famed naturalist John Muir came to Pasadena in the summer of 1877, he headed straight for the San Gabriel Mountains. He walked eastward along Orange Grove Avenue and made his way into Eaton Canyon, becoming the first person to document the difficult hike from the valley floor to the top of Mt. Wilson. That same year, Muir's friend and photographer Carleton Watkins captured Sierra Madre exactly as Muir saw it. Find out what these early visitors encountered and why they are important to local history when Ed Andersen, President of Arcadia Historical Society and Muir historian, presents "Sierra Madre: What John Muir Saw in 1877."
A native of Santa Cruz, Ed Andersen is a fourth generation Californian. He is a graduate of Santa Clara University and served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. After his military service, he worked for 24 years in sales with The Procter & Gamble Company, and six years afterward for Lee Hecht Harrison, one of the world’s leading career management companies. He currently serves as President of Arcadia Historical Society. Ed has always had an active interest in the history of the West and is an avid book collector and John Muir historian. He has written four books, including Lessons of the Wild, Learning from the Wisdom of Nature and The Truth About Forgiveness, What Your Therapist Isn’t Going to Tell You (co-authored with Thomas M. Shenk). He is a frequent speaker on trailblazers of the American West, including such characters as John Muir, E. J. “Lucky” Baldwin, Carleton Watkins, Jessie Benton Fremont, General George Patton, and others.
