Theirs is one of the lesser-known chapters of American history: the service of African American soldiers in the US Army, from the activation of “colored” units after the Civil War through the many conflicts of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Despite enduring racism, discrimination, poor equipment, and harsh conditions, Buffalo Soldiers became some of the most decorated and respected units in the Army. Their history can be complicated: they also shaped the American West by serving in Army campaigns against Native American tribes. Overall, they played a critical role in advancing civil rights through military service, leading to desegregation of the Armed Forces by President Truman. Their legacy lives on in the Army and has been an inspiration for generations of African Americans. But they are less known by most Americans.
