Founded in 1937, the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) is a pivotal non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Thoroughbred breeding and racing across California. The industry's roots trace back to the 1850s when the first known Thoroughbred, the Australian mare Black Swan, was brought to California, igniting a passion for Thoroughbred racing that overcame legal and societal hurdles to flourish once again in the 1930s.
